Our Mission

NOTE: As of August 19, 2017, our board approved changing the name of our organization to Next Careers.  For the short-term, we are transitioning names and logos — with URL change to follow.

At Next Careers, a California 501(c)3 corporation, we are building programs to help teens through older adults explore changing workforce opportunities and next-generation careers.

Our mission is to change and expand the way that we create next-generation careers in STEM, creative work, and tech-enabled careers.  Our main programs focus on creating classes and programs to support and inspire your next careers and adventures. . . whether you are 16, 21, 30, 45, or 60.

Based in Southern California, we are piloting a variety of programs and working with existing educational organizations to find new ways to think of career design and building non-traditional and hybrid career directions.

Help support our programs with volunteer time, partnerships, and resources.  Link to our W-9.

Our Programs

We focus on three programs:

FIRST Tech Challenge of Southern California/Greater Los Angeles (www.firsttechsocal.org)

Career Lab

Creative Tech Lab

FIRST Tech Challenge SoCal/LA

FIRST Tech Challenge of Southern California/Greater Los Angeles (www.firsttechsocal.org)

We work with approximately 1500 7th-12th graders across 100 organizations in Southern California each year from September through February to help them build STEM skills and interests through robotics, community engagement, project management, design thinking, and life skills.  The program is an affiliate of FIRST (www.firstinspires.org).  Rockwell Collins is the primary corporate sponsor for the regional championship and in supporting many teams.  Approximately 200 volunteers help run this program across 9 counties.  More information>>

Career Lab

Jobs are changing and the ways we get jobs are changing dramatically.  How can we create environments to help move people into new fields in an era of ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems), job scraping, and keyword matching?

We are working with partners on creating new human-to-human career development programs with industry sectors.  Stay tuned for fall 2017 announcements on this program.

Creative Tech Lab

We’ve been working in STEM workforce development through FIRST Tech Challenge for quite a while and thrive on the impact that the program is having with these 7th-12th graders in their lives afterwards.

We are expanding into STEAM, adding the arts and tech as a combination to programs in development for Summer 2018.  We have met so many high school students who are passionate about both music and technology, or art and technology.  We’re working with partners to develop programs to grow a program to bring students and professionals into contact to develop next-generation skills with next-generation technologies.
